YouthQuake! The 1960’s Revolution explores the dramatic impact of young people on music, fashion and written word during a decade of sweeping political, social and cultural change. The term was coined by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland and identified the “eruption of the young in every field” as a “youthquake” – a term that came to describe the rise of young people as the new arbiters of pop culture.
YouthQuake was driven by two leading subcultures of the 60’s era: the Mods and the Hippies and was centered in London. The YouthQuake movement was fun, spirited and youthful. Although both groups rejected the societal and artorial traditions of the “establishment,” they're daring individualistic styles were quickly adapted by musical artist and high fashion designers and mass marketers alike.
Some of the celebrity follows of YouthQuake included Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy, Penelope Tree, eruschka, and Edie Sedgwick who were often featured on the cover Vogue. Andy Warhol and his muses were also seen as part of the YouthQuake movement. Electronic artist, Alphabet Pony, makes reference to Edie Sedgwick, in his 2009 release. ‘Youthquake’.
