“A Night of Queery: A GLBTQ Film Festival & Panel Discussion” will take place on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in the West Hollywood City Council Chambers (625 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood, CA) and is an interactive program featuring the short films: OutSmart, Directed by Dawn Cobalt; Agorable, Directed by Bethany Orr; Chained!, Directed by Betsy Kalin; 24 Hitchhikers, Directed by Paul Detwiler; and When the Time’s Right, Directed by Linda Andersson. The short film program will be followed by an interactive panel discussion with the directors and feature an audience Q&A.
The film festival will be capped off with the premier of the full-length documentary, The Homofiles, which explores what life like for gay women living in California in the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s and documents Southern California’s post-WWII lesbian community and examines the central roles played by bars in the formation of culture and community. The film premier will be followed by an engaging panel discussion moderated by Marie Cartiernd feature the filmmaker Kimberly Esslinger and individuals featured in the documentary. The evening will conclude with a “Call to Action” dessert reception following the panel discussion.
The films will explore issues of sexuality, religion, identity, and culture throughout today's world.
The event is co-sponsored by the Queer Studies in Religion Caucus of the American Academy of Religion/Western Region, the City of West Hollywood, the Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission of the City of West Hollywood, the American Academy of Religion/Western Region, and the June Mazer Lesbian Archives.
