The festive season is upon us and The Good Luck gallery is celebrating with Group Hug, a show that embraces the gallery’s usual policy of focusing exclusively on self-taught art and expands upon it by including academically trained artists with aesthetic ties to outsider art.
More than twenty artists are featured, with works in a wide variety of mediums. Among the painters on display are modern day folk-art portraitist Elias Telles, the densely layered and mischievously dark collage paintings of Brian McDonald, the hallucinatory fairytale-like works of Shelli Tollman, and Jeff Cairns’ delicate and melancholy watercolors of birds. Other, often unorthodox mediums are also featured. These include the ceramic totems of centenarian Harry Steinberg, the poetry-laden stoneware of filmmaker Lee Lorenzo Lynch, the idiosyncratic millinery of Chris Springer and the pillow photography (that is, photographs printed on pillows) of Todd Squires.
The work of several compulsive visionaries is exhibited beside that of a wide array of outsider-influenced modern artists, bringing together a group united by an emotional sincerity and intuitive approach to their craft that goes against the grain of the contemporary mainstream art world. This will be a diverse and very colorful exhibit. Cash and carry will be available, with free wrapping for holiday gifts.
