TAHITIAN PHOTOGRAPHER MAKES U.S. GALLERY DEBUT
“Devoted : Male in Tahiti” Opens January 9th
Verner Degray, noted French fashion photographer (Kenzo), will make his American solo gallery debut in Hollywood @ Antebellum Gallery at 1643 North Las Palmas Avenue in Hollywood on Saturday January 9th, 2016. Opening Night Reception is from 7-9 pm on Saturday, January 9th, and the show continues through February 9th on Wednesdays from 5-7 pm, and Thursdays – Saturdays from 1-7 pm.
Instead of traditional curvaceous local women, carved gods or cutouts of palm fronds, Degray focuses on objects of his desire -- the handsome, young and athletic men of Tahiti.
Between shadow and light, strength and gentleness, Degray isolates how young men’s bodies should, and deserve to be shown. His years of work with his models – all amateurs – have also allowed him to explore the fragility of human nature, and to push the limits of how much he can project of his models’ lives into his work.
“The body of a man is not that of a woman – a particular grain, a muscle hanging in light, strength balanced by sensitivity. That is what I am trying to show in my work.”
