Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day a wee bit early with Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, as we host our March Cocktails in Historic Places™ at the Tam O’Shanter Restaurant in Atwater Village. Okay, we know it’s Scottish-themed, not Irish, but it’s such a delightful spot that we think St. Paddy himself would give it his blessin’, and every year the Tam produces an amazing St. Paddy’s day celebration on the day!
Originally opened in 1922 in what was then a hub of Los Angeles’ growing movie industry, “the Tam” was the favorite lunch spot of stars like Mary Pickford, Tom Mix and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle. Indeed, Walt Disney ate here so often that his animators jokingly referred to it as the “studio commissary” (and when you visit, be sure to look for the drawing he made to show his appreciation for the Tam’s excellent service). What makes the Tam O’Shanter really special, however, is more than its quaint old-world design and famous fans. It’s been proudly operated by the same family for the last 90 years, and they’ve ensured that it continues to thrive as one of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles. With a pedigree like that, it’s no wonder it’s one of our favorite “CHP” spots.
The Tam keeps its history alive, having recently redesigned their sign to be closer to the original one, featuring a large lightning bolt, which is a direct reference to the 1790 poem by Scottish poet Robert Burns, from which the "Tam O' Shanter" gets its name. There’s a wonderful old world atmosphere in the place, and the Tam features many excellent brews on tap, an unmatched selection of whiskeys and spirits, top notch old and new cocktails, and a carving station with some of the best turkey, ham, and beef in Los Angeles.
Come straight from work or slip into something more Deco – either way, plan to join us for no-host cocktails for an evening with like-minded people. Cocktails in Historic Places™ is open to members and non-members alike, and no reservations are required; however, if you wish to dine at the restaurant before or after our event, we suggest contacting the Tam O’Shanter directly to make a dinner reservation. There is also food and open seating in the bar area. Valet parking is available, and there is a moderate amount of street parking in the adjacent blocks as well. Hope to see you there!
