In the 18th century, many English aristocrats traveled to Europe on The Grand Tour specifically to see the art of ancient Rome. Their wealth enabled them to fund excavations happening around the peninsula, and, usually with permission of local authorities, they brought ancient objects back to their stately country homes and glorious London townhouses. This gallery course offers the chance to see Grand Tour objects in LACMA's collection. Ancient Roman sculpture and vases, Grand Tour portraits, and intricate silver illuminate the story of ancient objects and their re-discovery centuries later in Europe, as well as how they came to America and eventually to LACMA.
The class begins with an introductory lecture, followed by a private gallery tour. With art historian and museum educator Amber Smith.
