For those who don't know the contest here's a little bit of information:
The Eurovision Song Contest (short known as ESC or by a lot of people still called Grand Prix because of the French title Grand Prix D'Eurovision de la Chanson) is is the longest-running annual international TV song competition held, primarily, among the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 1956.
The show is always held by last years winning country.
This years motto is 'Celebrate Diversity'.
The rules are simple:
Each participating country (this year 43 countries) submits an original song to be performed on live television and radio and then casts votes for the other countries' songs to determine the most popular song in the competition.
Because during the years too many countries got part of the show the EBU decided to have two semi finale shows two days before the actual show.
But when it comes to the votings after all the performances every country is included.
For every contestant it is the greatest thing to receive "12 points" which is always translated by the host to French "douze points" since French speaking countries just love to hear their language.
Since 2000, France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom have automatically qualified for the final, regardless of their positions on the scoreboard in previous contests, as they are the four biggest financial contributors to the EBU.
These countries became known as the "Big Four". On 31 December 2010, it was announced that Italy would compete in the Eurovision Song Contest after a fourteen-year absence and that it would also automatically qualify for the final, joining the other four qualifiers to become the "Big Five", considered by some to be a controversial decision.
Notable winners of the contest were ABBA in 1974 for Sweden, Celine Dion in 1988 for Switzerland, France Gall in 1965 for Luxembourg or Conchita Wurst in 2014 for Austria.
The contest became a happy, campy and also political event throughout the years. For example: Israel made a huge statement by sending Dana International as a Transgender person in 1998 to the contest. After winning with her song 'Diva' Israel became much more interesting and important for the gay culture.
So basically you can say that the Eurovision Song Contest is a mixture of a Pride weekend, RuPaul's Drag Race and the Super Bowl.
Because America is not part of the ESC (we don’t have the best voting record, anyhow) who would you give our 12 points to?
