ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE
Filled with spectacular orchestral color, this week’s program paints a remarkable picture of the unique creative scene that was early 20th-century Paris. Brilliant French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard is our soloist for Ravel’s Concerto in G, heavily tinted by early American jazz.
And it was in Paris in 1910 that Igor Stravinsky’s breakthrough work, The Firebird, was premiered by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. From that moment to the present day, it has remained Stravinsky’s most popular piece.
Opening the [Saturday and Sunday evenings] is Ravel’s “morning music of a jester,” composed as a musical portrait of a friend and teeming with authentic flavors of Spain.
