ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE
Chosen as one of the recordings of the year by Alex Ross of The New Yorker, Andrew Norman’s Play mixes the highly energetic and the unexpectedly fanciful. According to Ross, the 40-minute work “is a sprawling, engulfing, furiously unpredictable piece in three symphonic movements.”
The Twitter-verse has already had a lively discussion about whether Play might just be the best orchestral work of the 21st century. “Norman’s use of the orchestra [is] wildly original, with new sounds and instrumental combinations emerging at virtually every moment. For all its technical virtuosity, though, Play also imparts a tremendous emotional punch, the aural narrative of an individual – a character, an idea – in search of fulfillment … clearly points up Norman’s staggering imagination and talent.” (Boston Globe)
It makes a captivating program partner with Tchaikovsky’s passionate Fourth Symphony.
