The Getty (Closed Temporarily)

(89 Ratings)
An L.A. art landmark
Art museums may be a dime a dozen in big cities, but no other city has a Getty. The J. Paul Getty Museum, part of the grand Getty Center, showcases world-famous classical art in an architecturally renowned complex. The site and the modern architecture that graces it are worth the trip alone. A menu-sized list of tours is available with focus ranging from exhibition talks to the Masterpiece of the Week program.

An art lovers paradise!

The late billionaire J Paul Getty left a sizable portion of his fortune to endow this museum. His money has been spent both judiciously and tastefully. Whether you appreciate Old Master's, Impressionism or Surrealism you will find the best at the Getty. Perched atop a small mountain overlooking ritzy Bel-Air and all the way to the Pacific Ocean this majestic white imported Italian stone building surrounded by magnificent gardens is a beauty to behold. And that is just the exterior! Waiting inside is every kind of amazing artwork available in the world. I can promise that you will not regret adding this stop to your tour itinerary. If time permits take the drive over to the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and see the Getty Italianate Villa which was the original home of Mr Getty and the museum.

Spectacular

The grounds, gardens are magnificent. Took Mom here on a recent visit and we all just enjoyed it immensely. One of the real great Museums of the world. She was in a wheelchair and everything about the experience was comfortable and was easy to maneuver.

Just OK for me

I feel almost controversial giving an art museum only 3 stars. But The Getty just doesn't rise to the level of a world-class art museum in my mind. First, I find the location (set on top of a mountain) as aloof and elitist. Second, I find the architecture of the buildings to be cold and almost sterile. And third, the art itself is pretty much limited to classical pieces (not my favorite). Sorry, but I just wasn't wowed by The Getty.

NOT the NY Metropolitan but great!

NO trip to the Los Angeles area would be complete with a visit to the Getty. They also have a wonderful restaurant. GO !!!!!
