Hospitals and hospices strive to send everyone home for the holidays. Anyone left is either too sick, has no home, or saddest of all, no one will have them.
Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles has a long-time tradition of caroling on Christmas Day at local AIDS wards, hospices, and related locations, where we take care of our own "family". We started in the mid-eighties when we had four routes visiting about 20 locations.
Although the number of wards and hospices has fortunately dwindled, there are still patients left alone. Our very welcome visit brings some of the only joy these people see during the holidays, and the spiritual gifts we receive in return are overwhelming. You will rarely experience a more appreciative audience.
It is also a time for those of us also with relatives far away or in similar family situations to exchange holiday cheer. The event could not be more laid back -- this is not a performance, but rather an intimate sharing with the patients and with each other.
All followed by a sumptuous feast!
It starts at 11:30 AM at Cedars-Sinai, and proceeds from there. You may come to all or just one. They have been spaced so you can join at any location. Caroling songbooks are provided on-site. The potluck starts at 4:30 PM.
All are welcome: friends, family, loved ones, singers and non-singers, including the party. Please join us in this wonderful tradition.
