Explore Guillermo del Toro’s extraordinary imagination and creative process through his collection of paintings, drawings, maquettes, artifacts, and concept film art in "Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters." Discover printmaking in Picasso and His Printers, extraordinaroy contemporary studio jewelry in Beyond Bling: Jewelry from the Lois Boardman Collection, the late 19th- and early 20th-century style known as Art Nouveau in France and Jugendstil in Germany in Apostles of Nature: Jugendstil and Art Nouveau, and LACMA's vast modern art collection. Participate in a gallery discussion, create art inspired by Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters, and enjoy a free reception in honor of college students—all after public hours.
Art-making Workshops:
Monsters or Bust! 3D Character Portrait Sculpture with Artist Brooke Sauer
Referencing the classical sculptural bust, develop and create a 3D model of a character portrait inspired by the variety of busts in Guillermo del Toro or from your imagination using model magic sculpting clay.
Brooke Sauer is an artist and educator that has created curriculum for LACMA, the Armory Center for the Arts, and the J. Paul Getty Center. She received an MFA from Art Center College of Design in video, installation, and performance, and has been collaborating for many years under the name of B&T, showing at LA Louver, the Hammer museum, LACE, Cirrus, POST, Highways Performance Space, and the Los Angeles Freewaves Festival. Brooke is currently in the process of publishing her first children’s book, which she has written and illustrated.
Codex Mysterium / The Book of Mysteries with Artist Gustavo Alberto Garcia Vaca
Workshop and demonstration by visual artist Gustavo Alberto Garcia Vaca. Using references from Guillermo Del Toro: At Home with Monsters, draw and create a print of your own book cover design based on an imagined ghost or monster story.
Gustavo Alberto Garcia Vaca is a multidisciplinary artist and writer. He exhibits his artwork in various galleries and museums, and his writing appears in literary journals and manga/comics. He has created art projects for science fiction and horror feature films released by Warner Bros, Universal, Paramount, and Disney. Gustavo exhibits his art and books yearly at Comic-Con in San Diego.
