Al Berto, a cult name in European literature, rose to fame in post-revolutionary Portugal. As a bohemian, joyful young man coming of age in Sines, Al Berto invigorates the younger generation, while simultaneously scandalizing the community's conservative adults. His lust for life leads him to meet João Maria, who epitomizes sexual freedom, and the two men become lovers. Based on the real-life diaries of Maria, the film delivers visceral performances and an engaging biographical portrait of the libertarian who became an infamous poet.
