The theme of this year's Association of Raza Educators (A.R.E.) Conference, held in Los Angeles, is "Ethnic Studies: In the Classroom and Beyond". The goal of the conference is to bring together educators, students, activists, and parents who teach or who are enrolled or interested in implementing Ethnic Studies (ES) courses in their classrooms, community centers, and popular education programs. Workshops will focus on providing readily available ES units, lesson plans, and other educational materials so participants can leave the event enriched and ready to implement ES programs in their schools, organizations, and communities.
Conference organizers will arrange a meeting during which Ethnic Studies Now advocates can update each other, share experiences and progress, and enrich best practices for ES implementation and organizing. Additionally, this year's A.R.E. conference will host a curriculum fair during lunch for local educators, students, and organizations to display their pedagogy and strategies.
Updates on specific location will soon be made available. All A.R.E. conferences are free of charge and are held in public schools. Food and childcare will also be provided. A.R.E is part of the Education for Liberation Network and is California's largest TAG (Teacher Activist Group) with chapters in Sacramento, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Those who are interested in facilitating a workshop can submit proposals to areconference16@gmail.com.
