Ven a leer, compartir, escuchar, o simplemente pensar.

Healing through poetry & reading
By focusing on the specific issues that Brown folx experience it is possible to reconstruct the character of an “intellectual”, while in the forced socialization with the ‘privileged’ population. Brown is Beautiful is a space where folx can shine light on to the aspects that specifically affect them and provide an understanding of issues that are unknown but directly inflict them. Brown is Beautiful is a space intended to help comprehend the great effect that invading paradigms have on brown communities. Come read, share, listen, or just think.
The first sessions was great way for everyone to introduce themselves. Knowing the importance of our stories helps heal ourselves and the community. It reflects a different narrative from what is the dominant story. If our stories are not told then our paradigm is not known. This means that our people are not represented or given the respect as being a vital part of society. If we own and share our stories then we, as a people and individuals, are visible – we do not fall onto the sidelines as ‘leeches’ of the dominant society. This helps in reconstructing what is seen as ‘intellectual’ or what is known to be the ‘acceptable’ members of society. Therefore we must own our stories and not be afraid to represent who we are as an individual and as a group/culture/generation/etc.
The second session will focus on art though the medium of painting, drawing, sketching, etc. Art therapy has become a common practice as a way to express pain that has been buried by the subconscious mind. Being able to express one's self is a vital part of healing. Brown is Beautiful will be providing paint along with brushes and other materials. Feel free to bring your own canvas (paper, cardboard, intimate belongings, etc.) along with any other supplies you may need, but most importantly bring your thoughts, expression, pain, happiness, or whatever it may be that you want to create. Folx of all skill levels are welcomed; we are all students just as we are all teachers.
Brown is beautiful will still offer discussions of POC Feminism through Maria Lugones’ work 'Peregrinajes/Pilgrimages: Theorizing Coalition Against Multiple Oppressions' and the peripheral effect of globalization through Ricardo J. Gomez’s work 'The Impact of Globalized Neoliberalism in Latin America'. Another book will also be added to this selection. 'The Meanings of Macho' by Matthew C. Gutmann. This book will help clarify what it means to be a 'man' in Mexico City; this will help clarify what it means to be a macho, a term that many have misunderstood. (The topic can change if the crowd feels the need to; the dialogue is open for Brown folx to express themselves)
By reading, writing, and listening to each other we can be prepared to find quality information and content to better understand the different aspects of the world in which we live, to enter into dialogue with arguments that defend our ideas, and to use language (English, Spanish, Nahuatl, etc.) to create new meanings and ideas. We can produce our own texts to reflect what we think, need, or want to know. Through dialogue with each other we can develop critical, analytical, and conceptual thinking.
Everyone is invited, but these meetings are Brown centered; as a means for Brown folx to heal themselves as a community.
