Presented by Arts Brookfield, the FIGat7th Downtown Festival kicks off August 4 and will run 4 consecutive weeks every Friday at FIGat7th. The outdoor plaza will be transformed into an intimate concert venue with performances by leading pop, rock, American roots, soul and alternative artists.
Hot on the heels of the August 4th performance by Tuxedo is the raunch ‘n’ roll singer-songwriter Hanni El Khatib on August 11.
Born in San Francisco, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist producer, director and co-owner of the Los Angeles-based independent record label Innovative Leisure, Hanni El Khatib does it all. He was described by the Guardian as a “former skate-punk raised on vintage rock and R&B [who] is keeping the spirit of 76 alive with his primal raunch ‘n’ roll.” El Khatib started Savage Times last December, after the Bataclan attacks forced the cancellation of a planned Paris performance. With unexpected time on his hands— and unexpected ideas on his mind—he’d scheduled open-ended studio time at Crystal Antlers frontman-turned-producer Jonny Bell’s Jazzcats studio. Each day, he’d take the hour-long drive through L.A.’s industrial corridor to Long Beach, sketching out riffs and lyrics as he drove.
Savage Times touches everything from garage rock to punk to disco, hip-hop and even some unexpected solo-guitar self- portraiture. But on the way, Hanni El Khatib also exploded his own idea of what he could do—even maybe who he was, or would be. Savage Times was an experiment, but an experience, too.
The FIGat7th Downtown Festival is free and open to all ages!
